Herbert R. Clabo Memorial Bridge

GATLINBURG, Tenn.—Meeting in regular session on Tuesday evening, members of the Gatlinburg City Commission adopted a Resolution which named a bridge at the intersection of Roaring Fork Road and Sherman Clabo Road in memory of Herbert R. Clabo.

Clabo was born less than 100 yards from this bridge and was a staple of the Roaring Fork community, where he lived for the better part of 100 years. Throughout his life, Clabo was dedicated to serving Gatlinburg, having served as a mailman for many years, including delivery mail on horseback early in his career.

“Although his home and farm were destroyed in the 2016 Chimney Tops II Wildfires, the Board of Commissioners of the City of Gatlinburg acknowledge that Herb Clabo’s presence will continue to live on in Roaring Fork and Gatlinburg with this bridge named in his honor and will permanently honor his contributions to the community,” Gatlinburg Mayor Mike Werner stated during Tuesday’s meeting.

Clabo was also a founding member of Roaring Fork Baptist Church, where he did not miss a service for 33 years. After his retirement, he was an active member of the Retired Citizens of the Smokies and made appearances on the Heartland Series giving his account of history of the area.
