GATLINBURG, Tenn.—A new assignment in the Gatlinburg Police Department is focusing on the education and enforcement of City Ordinances and codes. Officer Daniel Herron, a 12-year veteran of the Gatlinburg Police Department, began his role in the Codes Enforcement Officer position on October 24 and has used his first week in his new assignment by introducing himself to downtown business owners.
Herron’s primary focus is working jointly with the City’s Building and Planning Department to ensure the adherence to Ordinances and codes throughout Gatlinburg. Herron will also focus on educating the public and businesses on the rules and regulations involved with the City’s Ordinances.
“I am eager to help the many wonderful businesses and individuals in Gatlinburg understand our need for compliance with Ordinances and codes,” Herron said. “I look forward to meeting the many people in the business community in Gatlinburg and working together with each of them.”
The primary job duties of the Codes Enforcement Officer position include:
- Assisting business owners with understanding rules governing the construction and placement of signage, including current zoning requirements and ordinances, height and width requirements, lighting options, etc.
- Assist with signage issues with business owners and other entities.
- Assist with the enforcement of public right-of-way issues.
- Assist with conducting patrols of commercial property and private neighborhoods to ensure the safety and security of residents, visitors, and business owners.
- Enforce City sanitation rules and regulations and helps to assist with the inspection and compliances of bear-proof requirements.
- Enforce Ordinances involving overgrown lots, trash, junk, abandoned vehicles, dilapidated property and other nuisances.
- Investigate citizen calls for service.

While remaining as a uniformed, sworn officer, Herron will work in tandem with the City’s Building and Planning Department’s Building Official and Building Inspectors on Codes Compliance.
“The Department is excited to work with Officer Herron in this new role, which should help Gatlinburg’s business community to understand the codes and regulations,” Building and Planning Director Jeff Ownby said.
