Burn Ban in effect

GATLINBURG, Tenn.—Due to current unprecedented dry conditions, exceptionally low relative humidity and a very high fire danger, the Gatlinburg Fire Department has issued a burn ban until further notice. These conditions have created circumstances where open burning is too hazardous.

Any outdoor burning is prohibited with this ban, which includes burning in barrels, outdoor wood burning fire pits, and charcoal grills. As a reminder fireworks are prohibited in the City of Gatlinburg. Gas grills and gas fire pits are still permitted. This ban on open burning will be in effect until further notice.

Since September 16, only 2.24 inches of measurable rainfall has been recorded at the weather station located at the Gatlinburg Fire Department Headquarters on East Parkway, The National Weather Service has forecasted half an inch of rain or less on Friday evening and Saturday morning.

“The Gatlinburg Fire Department urges all individuals to heed this burn ban, as the recent dry weather and low humidity have led to a very high fire danger,” Gatlinburg Fire Chief Charlie Cole said. “Even with the forecast of rain on Friday evening and Saturday morning, these small amounts of precipitation will not alleviate the deficit of rainfall and dry conditions that have been experienced this fall. Please continue to be vigilant and aware of the fire risk in the area.”

Individuals are also reminded to take steps to make their property FireWise, including the removal of debris and leaves from around the perimeter of their house. Information on FireWise safety tips can be found at http://GatlinburgTN.gov/page/firewise.

“With leaves, limbs, and other debris having a tendency to pile up during the Fall, take this time to prepare your homes and properties by removing this debris from around your house,” Chief Cole said.

Even in normal conditions, the Gatlinburg Fire Department requires burn permits for any outdoor burning year-round. For more information on burn permits, please contact the Gatlinburg Fire Department at 865-436-5112.
