Gatlinburg Fire lifts burn ban

GATLINBURG, Tenn.—Due to recent rainfall, combined with higher levels of humidity the Gatlinburg Fire Department is lifting the burn ban, which was initially issued on Thursday, November 16. The lifting of the burn ban will allow recreational burning, including fire pits, campfires and charcoal grills, however burn permits for debris burning will not be issued until further notice.

Over the past week, an inch of rainfall has been recorded at the weather station located at the Gatlinburg Fire Department headquarters on East Parkway. Additionally, the National Weather Service has forecasted chances of precipitation over the coming weekend.

“The Gatlinburg Fire Department is very appreciative of the public’s awareness over the past two weeks to help mitigate the very high fire danger in the area,” Gatlinburg Fire Chief Charlie Cole said. “Even though this fire danger has subsided, we ask individuals to always remain vigilant and aware of fire risk in and around their homes.”

Individuals are also reminded to take steps to make their property FireWise, including the removal of debris and leaves from around the perimeter of their house. Information on FireWise safety tips can be found at http://GatlinburgTN.gov/page/firewise. The Gatlinburg Fire Department will conduct free FireWise assessments, which can be scheduled by calling the Fire Department at 865-436-5112.

“With leaves, limbs, and other debris having a tendency to pile up during the Fall, take this time to prepare your homes and properties by removing this debris from around your house,” Chief Cole said.

The Gatlinburg Fire Department requires burn permits for any outdoor burning year-round. For more information on burn permits, please contact the Gatlinburg Fire Department at 865-436-5112.
