GATLINBURG, Tenn.—The Gatlinburg Recreation Department recently held two Spring Trout Tournaments at the revitalized Herbert Holt Park during the first week of April.
A total of 190 enthusiastic participants joined in the two tournaments.
“These were great events and the Recreation Department wants to thank all of our participants and those who donated prizes,” Gatlinburg Trout Facility Manager Travis Williams said. “We are really pleased with the number of participants we had and we hope to make these tournaments even bigger next year.”
The first event, the 2024 Kids’ Trout Tournament on Monday, April 1, drew 118 young anglers under 15 years old. Eighty participants successfully landed fish during the tournament, with Crystalynne Smelcer, aged 9, claiming the top prize for her impressive catch, a 24-inch trout weighing 6.78 pounds.
On Saturday, April 6, the Recreation Department hosted its third annual Spring Trout Tournament and Litter Cleanup, where participants were required to collect a bag of litter from the riverbank during the event. A total of 42 adults and 30 youth took part, contributing to the removal of significant amounts of litter. Brantley Sutton, aged 8, caught the largest fish of the day—a 24.25-inch trout weighing 6.54 pounds.
The winning fish in both tournaments were landed in the children’s fishing stream located at Mynatt Park.
Also, during Saturday’s tournament Ryan and Micah Floyd collected the most litter, filling seven garbage bags full, contributing to the dumpster which was filled during the event. Keep Sevier Beautiful also attended the tournament, providing educational information to event attendees.
"The riverbank cleanup is a crucial aspect of these tournaments," Williams said. "Ensuring clean waters and surroundings is vital for an enjoyable fishing experience in Gatlinburg. Our participants' efforts truly make a difference."
