McCown Honored

GATLINBURG, Tenn.—The City of Gatlinburg held its first-ever Veterans Appreciation Luncheon on Wednesday, October 30, at the Gatlinburg Golf Course. The luncheon honored the City’s 46 employees who have served in the United States Armed Forces and was organized as a special precursor to Veterans Day to recognize the dedication and sacrifices of Gatlinburg’s veterans within the City’s workforce.

The luncheon began with an invocation from Gatlinburg Police Department Chaplain Brian Huff, the Gatlinburg Police Department Honor Guard presenting the colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Public Works Director Roger Sims. City Manager Greg Patterson, retired Gatlinburg Police Captain Jim Maples, James Patterson from Honor Flight of the Appalachians, and Robert Ford of Sevier County Veterans Services delivered remarks to commemorate the veterans' service.

City Manager Greg Patterson expressed his gratitude for each employee’s service to America and the importance of honoring their contributions for our Country’s freedom.

"This luncheon was a great event to honor the men and women of Gatlinburg’s workforce who have worn the uniform and served our country with distinction,” Patterson said “These employees bring a spirit of commitment and resilience to our community every day, and we are profoundly grateful for their dedication.”

In addition to honoring the employees, the City also honored Vice Mayor Mark McCown, who has served on the Gatlinburg City Commission since 2009. McCown, who served three years in the United States Army, was recognized for his service to America and presented with an American flag, which was flown over Gatlinburg City Hall. McCown was also presented with a Quilt of Appreciation, handmade by Gatlinburg Police Department Secretary Wanda Tippie, in recognition of his military service. Patterson also announced that this luncheon will now be an annual event named in honor of Vice Mayor McCown, acknowledging his military service and contributions to the City of Gatlinburg.

“Honoring Vice Mayor McCown’s military service and his leadership in our City is a fitting tribute,” Patterson said. “His unwavering commitment to Gatlinburg and his service to our country exemplify the spirit of service we strive to celebrate at this event. Naming the annual luncheon in his honor ensures that his legacy of dedication will inspire future generations.”

Additionally, Kevin Barreras, a longtime veteran employee at the Gatlinburg Golf Course, was honored with a Quilt for his lengthy and dedicated service in the Armed Forces.
