GATLINBURG, Tenn.— Due to current dry conditions, exceptionally low relative humidity and a very high fire danger, the Gatlinburg Fire Department has issued a burn ban until further notice. These conditions have created circumstances where open burning is too hazardous. This burn ban is in conjunction with the ban issued by the Sevier County Government, the cities of Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, and the Town of Pittman Center.
Any outdoor burning is prohibited with this ban, which includes burning in barrels, outdoor wood burning fire pits, and charcoal grills. Gas grills and gas fire pits are still permitted.
“The Gatlinburg Fire Department asks all individuals to heed this burn ban, as the recent dry weather and low humidity have led to a very high fire danger,” Gatlinburg Fire Chief Charlie Cole said. “Please continue to be vigilant and aware of the fire risk in the area.”
The Gatlinburg and Sevier County area is under a High Wind Watch through Sunday, March 16 at 2 a.m. these forecasted high winds could lead to rapid fire growth if a fire was to ignite.
Individuals are also reminded to take steps to make their property FireWise, including the removal of debris and leaves from around the perimeter of their house. Information on FireWise safety tips can be found at http://GatlinburgTN.gov/page/firewise.
“With leaves, limbs, and other debris having a tendency to pile up during the winter and fall, please take this time to prepare your homes and properties by removing this debris from around your house,” Chief Cole said.
Even in normal conditions, the Gatlinburg Fire Department requires burn permits for any outdoor burning year-round. For more information on burn permits, please contact the Gatlinburg Fire Department at 865-436-5112.
