2016 Wildfires Memorial

2016 Wildfires Memorial and Tribute Plaza

The City of Gatlinburg and Sevier County dedicated the 2016 Wildfires Memorial and Tribute Plaza, located at Mynatt Park, in June of 2023.

The Memorial involves two separate plazas flanking each side of LeConte Creek, one serving as a memorial to those who perished in the November 28, 2016 Wildfires and the other as a tribute to the agencies who assisted during the response and recovery efforts.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) was the main funding source of the Memorial and Tribute Plaza through a Transportation Alternatives Grant in the amount of $852,293 and is a reimbursement grant. The City of Gatlinburg and Sevier County funded 20 percent of the estimated cost of construction, plus engineering, which was performed by Robert Campbell & Associates. Whaley Construction was the contractor on the Memorial and Tribute Plaza.
